‘We picked up dogs as children pick up measles.
They joined us from every village on the march. They appeared in the
most unlikely desert places, and were always welcomed. Dogs of every breed and
all sizes, most of them quite unclassifiable. As someone once said to me

France.
” Some were faithful, others moved
on, but wherever they settled they experienced lavish affection and an excess
of good living!’
