‘December 2 1917 — Sunday — Awoke at 8 o’clock to find a broad beam of sunlight across the
foot of my bed! What a glorious day! Clear, limitless blue overhead, sunlight
on the green firs, a wind bringing an airlike wine that starts the blood
tingling. What a wonderful thing to be alive! Was ever green so brilliant or
blue so deep? From the observation tower the whole city of Rsuieims was clearly
visible.’
