WW1 US Medal of Honor earned OTD Sept 17 1917

Sep 17 1917 – During a storm United States Navy armored cruiser Huntington has her kite balloon blown away in bad weather while on convoy duty in the Atlantic.  The balloonist observer, Lieutenant (jg) Henry W. Hoyt was thrown in the ocean and found himself tangled in the wreckage of the balloon. Seeing this Patrick McGunigal jumped overboard and pulled Hoyt to safety. For rescuing the balloonist, McGunigal is awarded the Medal of Honor
